In recent times, Dental Implant treatment has become more and more popular, despite it usually being a slightly more expensive treatment option. The reason for this is that is it widely accepted that Dental Implants are the best way to replace teeth. Saying this, it is not always the best option, here are some things to consider when choosing the right treatment option.
When did you lose the tooth?
If you loose a tooth, then you should have it replaced as soon as possible (sometimes leaving 3 months for initial bone healing).
If your tooth has been missing for many years, then the bone which used to support the tooth may well have reduced, making dental implant placement more difficult. They can still be placed, however, you may need to consider other pre-treatments to restore the bone level.
If you consider a dental bridge, rather than a dental implant, then the bone level is only important for cosmetic purposes.
In many cosmetic areas, it is possible to remove the old tooth, and place the implant tooth in one treatment, meaning you do not need to wear a temporary denture while the implant is healing in the bone.
Are the teeth either side of the missing tooth healthy?
The health of the teeth either side of the missing tooth are very important for dental bridge treatment. Imagine the bridge is a house, and the teeth are foundations: so you always want to build houses on healthy, strong foundations.
If you only have teeth on one side of the missing tooth, then it is often better to place dental implants.
Are you medically fit and well?
One factor affecting the success of dental implant treatment is your wound healing. If you have poorly controlled diabetes, or you smoke, then the success rate for dental implants will be reduced. You will need to see a good implant dentist to assess how much your condition will affect potential dental implant treatment.
Another very important medication type to take into account before ANY dental treatment are bisphosphonates. It can be very dangerous to carry out any surgical dental treatment when you are on this medication, and the risks and benefits will need to be clearly identified, your implant dentist will be able to explain the risks and benefits of this with you.
Do you need teeth in a hurry
Although dental implants can give you teeth in one day, in some cases this may not be possible. In these cases, it may be better to look at the option of dental bridges to give you your final teeth, in a short time.
What is your budget?
For a single missing tooth, the price difference between a bridge and a dental implant and crown is not a lot (usually less than £300)
Dental implants cost from £2500, and your individual treatment fee can be split into easy monthly payments, however we do need to see you for a full assessment before we give you your actual treatment fee.
