Introduction To Dental Implant Treatment

What is Dental Implant Treatment

Dental implants are the most natural feeling and looking replacement for missing teeth. They can also be used to replace teeth which are extremely unhealthy.

This helps to restore a more natural looking smile, and a smile which is healthy, letting you feel more confident and making you able to eat whatever you like.

The dental implant itself is a small metal cylinder that is placed where your natural tooth would have been. A ceramic tooth is then placed on the implant, and this is the bit that you see.

If you are replacing many teeth, then often you can have a few strategically placed implants to support many teeth. For example 4 implants can often support a full set of lower teeth.

How can we be sure that the end result is what we are expecting?

Art is subjective, and creating a smile is more art than science.

To ensure that we achieve the best results for you, we start by designing the final smile. This is the same way an architect will design a building before instructing the builders.

The only way to truly see what your smile will look like is to let you test drive it in your mouth – the Trial Smile.

Your trial smile will let you try out the smile over a few days or weeks, testing it out in real life, and not just for two minutes in the dental chair.

The advantage is that we can make as many adjustments to the trial smile as we need to, letting us perfect it before committing to the final smile.

Does Dental Implant Treatment Hurt?

Dental implant treatment is minor surgery, and you may expect it hurts. Surprisingly, there is very little discomfort during and after the treatment.

A few years ago, we carried out a treatment for a lady where we removed all of her diseased teeth, placed 10 dental implants (6 at the top, 4 at the bottom), and gave her fixed teeth on the same day.

This is an epic amount of treatment to do in one day.

I saw her the day after this treatment to make sure that all was well, and she said that she was experiencing a mild discomfort – and this is someone who was terrified about going to the dentist for years!

We have stopped prescribing painkillers after treatment because its not often needed. We do however prescribe a short course of other medicine to control the swelling after treatment.

What are the risks with Dental Implant Treatment?

As with anything, there are potential risks to be aware of. If you have even read the information leaflet of Ibuprofen, you may be surprised about some of the risks. Just like the risks with Ibuprofen, the major risks associated with dental implant treatment are rare.

The major risks are related to injury or damage to structures in the bone, for example nerves and air sinuses.

Luckily these risks are minimised if the implant placement is digitally planned. This is a clever technique where the implant placement done on a computer, during the planning stage, using state of the art software and a 3 dimensional x-ray called a cone beam CT Scan.

This information is then merged with a 3D model of your teeth, and a surgical guide is 3D printed. This lets us place your dental implant in the most accurate position possible, replicating the digital planning. This method reduces stress, reduces risk and reduces the time taken for your treatment.
