The only reason that someone would go to an European country, like Hungary for dental implant treatment is because its cheap. Its very cheap compared to the UK. You could save thousands – and many people do!
We all know that you get what you pay for, but often the idea of saving over 50% of the cost of implants (often working out to thousands of pounds), is a far greater attraction than getting the treatment done properly.
I recently saw a patient who was originally from Estonia, and had her lower teeth replaced with dental implants there. This was about 5 years ago.
When I saw her, she hated the appearance of these implants (and they did look bad!), and looking at the x rays, 50% of the support bone of these implants had been eaten away, meaning they were failing – its only a matter of time until they come out completely.
Because of this, she wanted the same treatment at the top, but only done to a much higher standard. So we looked at a few options, found something that fitted her budget, and we are going to place the implants next week!
There are a few key things to remember about going to different countries for treatment – a lot of overseas dentists advertise this, because its a quick money making scheme for them.
They know dental implants can be expensive if you follow all the proper stages, so they offer cheap implants, and put teeth onto the implants very quickly. This is great, the patient leaves with teeth and is happy. The truth is that implants hardly ever cause problems in the weeks and months after placement. They cause problems years after placement – so when the person starts to get problems, they are very unlikely to go back (assuming that dentist is still in business!)- and this is why many cheap overseas dentists get away with it.
Another security (for them) is that in Hungary especially, there is no way the legal system of the UK can prosecute dentists in Hungary – its outside the EU.
Ok, so the sensible choice is to have the treatment carried out in the UK, with a dentist who can provide you long term care and ensure that your implants last as long as you do. But this is going to be expensive… right?
Well, it depends what you are comparing it to. There are usually many different options when it comes to replacing your teeth, especially if you need a full set replaced. Even if you choose a less expensive option today, often you can easily upgrade to a better option at a later date, using the implants that you have originally placed.
If you have implants placed abroad, and the bone gets eaten away (which happens often – without you even being aware of it until its too late), you will lose your teeth again, and be in a much worse situation because you have lost a load of bone too! This makes implant treatment more complex, and more expensive!
admittedly, many dentists in the UK do not do the best job when trying to find a good solution to patients needs, and balancing this with treatment fees. Many will just offer the gold standard (or worse, the most profitable!!) – and this can force patients to look at other options!
Often there are ways to safely reduce treatment fees (within reason), by looking at alternative treatments, and possibly combining with dental implants (if needed).
