Lets face it, dental implant treatment is expensive.
And although the “best” options are often suggested, these are out of the price range for a lot of people.
For example, upper and lower all on 4 with high quality zirconia bridges can easily cost more than £30,000. (we typically charge £32,000).
Now, you could find a cheaper dentist, and there are lots in the UK and abroad, but ultimately, there will be compromises that you are not aware of, and will make long term care of the teeth far more difficult.
So what other options do we have?
Well, lets look at the other end of the scale. If you have no good teeth, then the simplest option is a removable denture.
This normally puts a lot of people off – just the thought of having loose teeth in the mouth – and the “denture look”.
But even a removable denture can sometimes be a good solution.
This treatment gets a bad name because most dentures are made very badly, on the NHS (in the UK)
The better quality the denture, the better fit will be and the better the suction it can produce to hold in place.
But what if we want to improve this with Dental Implants?
Well, then either normal or mini implants can be used to secure the denture in place.
Dental implants will act like a solid anchor for the denture to grip on to.
Mini dental implants are less expensive, and can only hold a removable set of teeth.
As with any “gripping points,” the more you have, the more secure it will be.
To keep costs low, you can have two mini implants, and have the denture clip into them.
In theory you could just have one, but we do need to be careful not to overload the implants.
Avoiding the Denture Look
Now, that you have options for the stability of the denture, now, lets look at the aesthetics.
The good news is that dentures can look extremely natural. There are a wide variety in the looks of different teeth, and if your dentist has an aesthetic eye, then they will be able to position the teeth so that you are showing the right amount of teeth, and also design the smile, so that it looks natural.
Here is a smile at the “try in” stage.
This means that you are able to visualise the colour, position and the overall look of the smile before committing to the final set.
We always get the look of the smile in the try in stages, this means that the end look is exactly what the patient is looking for, and there are no surprises.
The final teeth will be strongly held in place and will last a long time.
Solutions like this can be upgraded in the future, if needed, but very few people upgrade to different implants. The dentures may need to be replaced every 5 years or so, due to normal wear and tear.
Solutions with mini implants cost circa £5000- £7500 (Oct 2023) depending on how many mini implants are placed.
Another advantage of these is that you can often have these with little to no bone grafting – because they are small, they need less bone.
